Synopsis
"I am Mother" is an Australian science fiction suspense movie, directed by Grant Sputore, starring Hilary Swank, Clara Rugaard, and Rose Byrne. The movie tells that after the world fight, in order to make human reproduce again, a robot named "Mother" successfully cultivated the first new-generation human daughter, and the two lived in a stable life in the base. But one day a wounded mysterious woman suddenly broke into the base, completely subverting their perception of the outside world over the years.

Human can be better
Science fiction has always been my personal favorite movie type. In addition to relying on visual effects and dramatic plots to satisfy unknown imaginations, the core of the story and the creative background are mostly of profound significance and connotation.

It can be seen that although the mother asked the daughter who to choose the side and judge whether she should believe in robots or outsiders, and become the storyline that humans hope for the last time, but if you think carefully about the story, you can find the theme of the movie far deeper than we can see on the surface, in this movie we explore the fundamental values of morality, humanity, and life through the daughter's choices.

Unknown world
When watching this movie, many bridge sections made me think of another sci-fi thriller movie "10 Cloverfield Lane" with an underground bunker. One of the main characters lived in the facility from an early age. The other was unconscious in a car accident at the time of the disaster and couldn’t get in touch with the outside world. He only learned the truth about the world by speaking unilaterally.

What's interesting about this type of movie is that in the case of limited information, the audience no longer watches the entire event from the perspective of God, but stands on the same footing as the character, and finds out the hidden secrets behind the scenes as the plot progresses.

Although "I am Mother" has amazing special effects technology, the movie format is actually very small. There are few big scenes that we generally think of science fiction movies. It simply focuses on the performance of the daughter facing the problem and slowly throws out the conflict and contradiction between the words of "mother" and "woman" let the audience choose the things we want to believe from the message provided by the movie with the daughter.

In some extent, "I am Mother" is a bit like the concept of dystopian movies. People's minds have been restrained from an early age. They mistakenly believe that they live in a perfect environment and then the more they dig, the more truth they find is scary. But that means real really?

The choice dilemma of moral
Just like dystopian movies have always been very serious but most of the works only describe the characters who want to break through the status quo, and almost never have thought deeply and explored the question: "What if this system is really necessary for humans?" This movie focuses on this point and ponders deeply.

It cooperates with the unknown outside situation to deepen the contradictions in the character's heart. Through the various reactions and behaviors of the character, it gives the audience space for reflection and thinking, and leads to the movie core theme about humanity.

As in the first half of the movie, a train question was raised as an examination, should this person be rescued? What else to do, sacrificing his life to save the other five? Maybe we all have our own answer, but once we add other assumptions, such as one of us is a family member or friend, we may end up with very different choices.

This movie puts this deep philosophical issue into the movie in order to highlight the selfishness and selflessness of human beings, and turn the whole story into a test to judge "fit" or "not fit".

The Mother
In the end, the lessons include the concepts taught usually, the first contact with small animals, even the intrusion of outsiders, the confrontation between the human and the robot, and the yearning and identification of similar people.

All of these were arranged by Mother as the original title "I Am Mother", allows her daughter to learn step by step how to be a mother and take on the mission of regenerating and thriving for human beings. To help unite the group's centripetal force to help each other, even in troubled times, it can show the central idea of human warmth.

Acquired teaching and learning
Interestingly, the daughter No. 1 was put into the outside world by her mother at an early age, forming a real human character that distrusts people and places her own emphasis on everything. Daughter No. 2 didn’t reach the standard and was destroyed during childhood. Daughter No.3 finally met the standard because of "mother learning" and successfully lived to grow up.

This shows that the development of human character has an absolute relationship with the background of growth and education. Now, in which direction should we work hard after socialization? It is a question that what kind of ideas is appropriate to give the next generation. Although there is no absolute answer, I think it is supposed be considered.

Conclusion
On the whole, "I am Mother" starts from the biggest difference between humans and machines, that is, everyone's free thinking, individual differences and imperfections, let the original trust extend the reversal into the discussion of human nature.

The movie didn’t give a standard answer at the end. Instead, it gave the audience a lot of space for thinking. Is life equal or different? Can we take the lives of a few to save the majority? These unsolvable puzzles are the movie which is the most attractive place.
