Movie Review - Fantasy Island

The feeling after watching this movie –Fantasy Island……

"Fantasy Island" is an American fantasy thriller movie released in 2020, directed by Jeff Wadlow, starring Michael Pena, Lucy Hale, Maggie Q, Portia Doubleday and adapted The TV series "Fantasy Island" which aired in 1977 tells the story of the mysterious butler Mr. Luke in charge of an island like a fairyland on the earth. He entertains five lucky people to come to the island to realize their lifelong dreams. However, after the happy time, these wonderful fantasies also began to twist and change, and the seemingly perfect holiday island instantly became a nightmare place for tourists.

Blumhouse skill

This kind of movie that sets the story in a mountain or island isolated from the world is a subject that I am very interested in, not only because it can create a stronger sense of suspense with the unknown of the audience and characters, and strengthen the thriller atmosphere of the entire movie. The gap that arises after the character discovers the truth can also bring out the topics that the movie hopes to explore, giving the audience more opportunities to think.

Fantasy island is an island in an unknown area. The people couldn’t call for help and they can only gather those who were also abducted to execute the escape plan. Although some chaotic narrative rhythms may be the biggest flaw of this movie, but the characters have gone from knowing each other, enjoying the dreams they hope to achieve, and finally deciding to destroy the stones that bring the mysterious power to the island.

The entire movie is hidden behind the dark side of a beautiful illusion, with a little black humorous jokes, which is known as the combination of "The Cabin in the woods" and "Westworld" is not surprising.

Achieve dreams

I like the character and background of each character in this movie, whether it is the miss of family, the regret of love, the shadow of being bullied during school, or even the failure to reach out when others are in trouble. The movie is based on these long-standing troubles in their hearts. Through fantasy island, they can rewrite the past, heal the pain, or help people realize their dreams.

However, in the end, it reflects the fundamental human nature that people can’t deny. To a certain extent, the core theme of the story is also very similar to that of "The Room" which can fulfill all the wishes of people last year.

If "Paradise Hills" tells the story of women's independence and autonomy thought is based on the heroine's departure from the island, the wishes made on the island by the characters from this movie not only show the loss and regret that people have in their hearts, but also using the beautiful setting of that “everything can be achieved” first and later “uncertain what accidents will happen” and “everything must go on” results.

Even if everyone has their own dreams, but sometimes the aspirational goals and future may eventually have to pay many sacrifices and costs, or they may not be as perfect as we originally expected.

Clever plots

The movie finally succeeded in using an unpredictable plot flip to gather the foreshadowing laid down in the first half. Originally, several characters seemed to be fulfilling their wishes, but in fact they could not only influence each other, but also have a deep relationship. All of them caused the audience to have a dislocation of time and space, as if walking into another world, but the illusion never leaving this island adds a lot of fantasy to the movie.

Maybe the ending of the movie is only one sentence: "That's what I'm acting." It is so casual to explain the unreasonable plot loopholes in this movie, but the concept and ingenuity of the overall story are still quite worthy of recognition.

Life can’t be restarted, and we can’t forget our regrets and hurts just because we have achieved our wishes. They have already become a part of our lives. We can only let them go, and try to let these past experiences become our driving force for the future.

We originally thought that the island of "Fantasy Island" was actually malicious, but in fact, like Elena played by Maggie Q, she felt the burden of responsibility while marrying her ex-boyfriend and having children. After having everything, they are in a corresponding relationship of gain and loss. In the end, what kind of result this magic wish will evolve is determined by the person self.

Conclusion

On the whole, "Fantasy Island" does have shortcomings such as too much wishful thinking, inadequate narrative skills, and disorderly rhythms. However, it can’t be denied that the entire scene and the creative idea of the story still saved the movie. I think this is the strength of Blumhouse
